Summary
This piece consists in reading out a fragment of Wittgenstein's
"Philosophical Investigations" in German, without having the slightest idea of the German language (only some films and TV)

We speak German because we are in Germany. We
speak Spanish because we were born in Spain. We
translate into English so that we can be understood in
other colonised countries.
Our doubt here (and there) is always the same: Are we
being understood? Loud and clear?
Wittgenstein thought about these issues and wrote down
his thoughts. We read them.

 

“156. Dies wird klarer werden, wenn wir die Betrachtung eines andern Wortes einschalten, nämlich des Wortes >>lesen<<. Zuerst mu& ich bemerken, da& ich zum >Lesen<, in dieser Betrachtung, nicht das Verstehen des Sinns des Gelesenen rechne; sondern Lesen ist hier die Tätigkeit, Geschriebenes oder Gedrucktes in Laute unzusetzen; auch aber, nacht Diktat zu schreiben, Gedrucktes abzuschreiben, nach Noten zu spielen und dergleichen.“ Ludwig Wittgenstein. “Philosophische Untersuchungen”
